7 Words That Cut Deep + Crying Over A Turkey Sandwich

“You’re really enjoying that sandwich, aren’t you?”

I’ll never forget how these 7 little words broke me down to tears…

And how the pain intensified with each shameful chew.

Imagine chubby little 6th grade Derek sitting at the dinner table…

Balling my eyes out…

Feeling insecure about how ugly I must look right now…

Pulling my shirt down so the material won’t get caught in my rolls and reveal how out of shape I’d gotten.

For the first time in my life I was fat, hungry, and shamed to eat.

I had just packed on 40lbs of flab because of a bike accident I had just 3 months prior…

Now I’m being teased because of my weight.

Words cut much deeper when you feel self-conscience.

And these 7 words coming from Paullette Owens, someone I love, my group home administrator, a woman who was like a 4th mother to me…

Cut my very core… AND I DESERVED IT…

Let me quickly explain.

Back in 6th grade, I ran circles around just about everyone in gym class…

Slender, smart, talented, and arrogant… a true Leo. (haha)

I bagged on all the “big boned folks” and “sloppy fat people” in class. Especially Ann.

A chunky Asian girl who always seemed to be all up in my business.

Anywho, story for another time… back to the sandwich.

It was karma that someone caught me at my heaviest weight… aimed a fat joke… and obliterated me!

Vanquish the injured dragon…

Kill the beast while he’s wounded…

Choke the chode with a cheeseburger and watch his body fall over and DIE!

Except…

It wasn’t a fat joke.

Paulette apologized immediately… she never meant to hurt me when she said “You’re really enjoying that sandwich, aren’t you?”

What’s even funnier is I WAS enjoying the sandwich…

I made it with all fresh ingredients… I WAS chowing down on it… it was a delicious turkey sandwich.

That day taught me a powerful marketing lesson I’ll never forget.
